For the second consecutive year, we are elated to have received the coveted nod from Tim Atkin for our Chenin Blancs. Both our Chenin Blanc wines were scored above 90 in the 2021 report on South African wines, compiled by the renowned British Master of Wine, wine judge and commentator.
Our flagship, the Brookdale Chenin Blanc (2019), retains a solid rating of 93 for the same vintage judged by Tim Atkin in 2020. It was however our Brookdale Mason Road Chenin Blanc which made great strides this year much to our delight! The 2020 vintage has now broken through the 90’s bar to walk away with a score of 91, improving last year’s score of 88 for the previous vintage (2019). We are immensely proud of our cellar and vineyard teams for this amazing achievement. Our estate is still new and we’re learning her strengths and possibilities with every vintage.
Winemaker, Kiara Scott, and her team are leading our wine portfolio in exciting new directions. Once an overgrown and underused vineyard, our 67-hectares are being put to use and we are over joyed with the progress they continue to make. Tim Rudd, proprietor of Brookdale Estate, has a vision to create a world-class country estate producing fine wines, starting with a single block of quietly thriving old-vine Chenin Blanc, currently estimated to be about 36 years old. This was our maiden release in 2017 and new vineyards were planted on the estate over the next few years, including more Chenin Blanc. As our Chenins continue to gain respect by top critics and favour amongst wine lovers, Brookdale wines prove that Chenin thrives in our terroir, set above Paarl against the dramatic backdrop of the Klein Drakenstein mountains.
